Abstract—The approaches to using a digital camera as a measuring instrument in soil profile study are dis-
cussed. Methodologically, the measurement is based on the concepts and methods used in the earth surface
analysis by multichannel remote sensing. The following methods are scrutinized by the example of a specific
soil profile: multidimensional image representation; measurement and structure representation using wavelet
transformation; image classification with distinguishing types of elementary soil units with various degree of
brightness and their ratios in three survey channels.
